Holmes was showing me a letter from Neil Gibson, a millionaire American who made his money from gold mining. His wife had been shot dead and the family governess, Miss Dunbar, was on trial for her murder. The letter from Mr Gibson was in support of Miss Dunbar who he believed to be innocent, but Holmes thought the evidence against her was strong.
“I fear it is a thankless business. I can discover facts, Watson, but I cannot change them.”
The artefact we chose from this story was a pair of pistols because they were central to the case.
